Describe the job in pickup-truck loads, because that's the unit everybody can actually picture. A garage that would take five or six trips fits the 12. A house-clearing that would take seven or eight fits the 16. When you're between the two, take the bigger one: the gap is $30 to $50, and a second delivery costs a lot more than that.
The other thing worth knowing is what happens to your driveway, which is nothing dramatic. The dumpster slides off the back of the truck onto a flat spot, sits on its rails for the rental, and gets winched back on. One of Jeff's reviews describes him making a run to Lowe's for materials to protect a brand-new driveway before he'd set the container on it. If yours is new or sealed, say so when you book and he'll plan the set around it.
Concrete, dirt, shingles and plaster and lath are the exception, and they're worth knowing about before delivery rather than after. Those four carry 1,000 pounds included and $50 a ton beyond it, weighed on the scale ticket, and they go in the 12-yard only.
Plaster and lath is the one that catches Richmond homeowners out. A great many houses around Wayne County are old enough to have it behind the drywall, and by weight it behaves like concrete. If you're opening up walls in an older house, say so on the phone and the quote will be right the first time.
Both sizes are 12 feet long and 6 feet wide, about the length of a pickup truck, and they sit on most driveways with room left. If your drive is tight, steep or shared, describe it on the phone and Jeff will give you a straight answer.
